FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(NEW YORK, NY) May 27, 2003 - Eartha Kitt, the original catwoman joins the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and Petfinder.com to celebrate June as Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month.  The internationally recognized theatre, film, cabaret, television and recording industry star is donating her legendary voice and support to help raise awareness about the wonderful cats and kittens available for adoption at shelters nationwide.  "At this time of year when animal shelters are over-flowing with cats of all ages, there has never been a better time to adopt a feline friend," comments Ms. Kitt, an animal lover and longtime supporter of the ASPCA. "Bringing this new friend into your home and heart will help reduce stress and improve the overall quality of your life forever." Studies have shown that felines can help Americans live longer and healthier lives by easing anxiety, lowering blood pressure and releasing "feel good" endorphins.

Shelters have wacky kittens, adventuresome adolescents, captivating young adults and mature hedonistic comfort-seekers that await the perfect family.  Such diversity could be overwhelming if it weren't for the skilled adoption counselors on hand to help visitors discover their kindred spirits in feline form.  "Spring is the time of year when animal shelters are filled with cats of all ages, sizes, and colors," said Stephen J. Musso, Acting President of the ASPCA.  "By adopting a cat, not only are you giving them a second chance, but you will also have a lifelong companion who will bring many years of love and devotion to your family."  New and potential cat owners can log on to www.aspca.org to download information on cat care, behavior and adoption advice.

The ASPCA National Shelter Outreach department (NSO) with the help from makers of Fresh Step® Scoopable cat litter is providing promotional materials to over 8,000 shelters and rescue groups nationwide.  The materials include valuable guidelines for shelter staff, tip sheets for new adopters and poster art, donated by designer Laurel Burch.

Make Pet Adoption Your First Option® is a message that the ASPCA encourages throughout the year to facilitate the goal of ending the euthanasia of all adoptable animals.  The ASPCA's online partner Petfinder.com is helping to achieve this goal and supports Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month.  By logging onto the ASPCA's website, potential adopters will also receive a personal message from Ms. Kitt as well as a link to Petfinder.com which contains a searchable database of over 4,500 animal shelters and rescue groups.  All potential adopters are able to view thousands of animals ranging in age, size, breed and location.
